How to get Uptrip cards

Last reviewed

Uptrip cards usually start with a flight: you fly with a Lufthansa Group airline, scan your boarding pass with the Uptrip app and pick cards from a selection made for that trip. A card you did not fly for can still come from another collector on OpenSea, as long as its owner has minted it. Here is how to get Uptrip cards both ways, and what each route means for your collections.

Collecting cards on your own flights

The cards live in the Uptrip app on your phone, and Uptrip's help says the app costs nothing to use. Once you have flown, you add the trip by scanning its boarding pass. Uptrip reads the pass to confirm that the flight really happened and that you were the passenger.

Each flight segment then unlocks a small set of cards generated for exactly that flight. Typical candidates are the city you left from, the city you landed in, the aircraft type and the airline that operated the segment. You get to keep part of that set, so think about which cards your collections still lack before you choose. Occasionally a special card shows up among the options as well.

Which flights earn cards

Uptrip's help names the Lufthansa Group's airlines as its partners: Lufthansa and Lufthansa City Airlines, SWISS and Edelweiss Air, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, Air Dolomiti, Eurowings and Discover. ITA Airways was added to that list later, which shows that the partner set can change.

Older trips can count too, within limits. A flight has to fall after your sign-up and must not lie too far back, and new users may add a few boarding passes from before they registered. The app states the exact limits. To see which airlines have cards and what is offered for each, open the airline pages of this site.

Uptrip and Miles & More

Uptrip has updated its terms of use for its transition to Miles & More, so the conditions shown in the app are the ones that count. Collecting cards does not cost you your miles: as a Miles & More member you keep earning them for your flights. Some rewards in the app can require a Miles & More account, so check the Uptrip app for the collection you are working on.

Buying a card you are missing

Before a card can move to someone else's wallet or go up for sale on OpenSea, its owner has to mint it: they link a crypto wallet with their Uptrip account and turn the card into an NFT. Our guide to Uptrip NFTs covers this step.

To buy, start by comparing the current offers here, for instance through Uptrip cards by city. You then pay on OpenSea, and our walkthrough for buying on OpenSea goes through every step. According to Uptrip's help, a card that reaches a wallet connected to your Uptrip account appears in the app without any action on your part.

Earned or bought: why the route matters

A card from your own flight is an original; a card from anyone else is not. That makes your choice after each flight worth some thought. If a collection you are working on asks for a minimum of originals, you fill those places by picking cards it can use whenever a flight offers them.

Bought cards are the tool for the rest: the places a collection leaves open to non-originals. Before you spend money, compare the requirements on its collection page with the cards you already hold, and buy for the gap your flights will not cover. Our guide to original cards goes deeper, and the Uptrip cards FAQ answers related questions.

Uptrip sets these rules in its app and can change them. Before you plan a flight around a card or pay for a card, look up the current conditions in the Uptrip app.
